Last week’s horrific murders in Washington, DC, where a terrorist shouting “Free Palestine” targeted an AJC event with Israeli Embassy staff, have sent shockwaves through Jewish communities nationwide. This brutal act of antisemitic violence is not an isolated incident but a chilling escalation of hatred that demands urgent attention. As New York City approaches its Democratic primaries next month, the rising tide of antisemitism is fueling a voter backlash that could reshape the political landscape, from Manhattan’s borough presidency to Brooklyn’s City Council races. NYC voters must heed this wake-up call and reject candidates who enable or excuse this dangerous rhetoric.

In Brooklyn’s District 39, encompassing Park Slope, incumbent Shahana Hanif, a Democratic Socialist aligned with the Working Families Party, faces a formidable challenge from Maya Kornberg, a research fellow at the progressive Brennan Center for Justice. Hanif’s refusal to unequivocally condemn Hamas after the October 7, 2023, atrocities and her persistent anti-Israel stance have alienated many Jewish constituents, who feel her rhetoric stokes division. Kornberg, a pragmatic progressive, has pledged to combat hate and prioritize community safety, earning support from pro-Israel groups and voters frustrated with Hanif’s extremism.

Just south in District 38, covering Sunset Park and Red Hook, Ling Ye, a former aide to Rep. Dan Goldman, is challenging incumbent Alexa Avilés, another far-left Democrat with ties to the Democratic Socialists of America. Avilés’s vocal support for anti-Israel protests and her alignment with divisive policies have drawn criticism from constituents who prioritize unity and public safety. Ye, advocating for practical solutions like adequate police funding, represents a moderate alternative in a district increasingly wary of radical posturing.

The DC killings also cast a shadow over the Manhattan Borough President race, where incumbent Mark Levine, seen as a reliable ally to the Jewish community, faces Councilman Justin Brannan. Brannan’s recent endorsements from figures like Linda Sarsour and DSA-aligned council members have raised concerns among Jewish voters, who fear his shift toward the far left signals a troubling tolerance for anti-Israel sentiment. The DC tragedy underscores the stakes: voters must choose leaders who unequivocally stand against antisemitism, not those who court radical factions.

The surge of antisemitic violence, from DC’s targeted murders to vandalism in Park Slope, reveals a disturbing truth: much of today’s political antisemitism festers within the Democratic Party’s far-left wing. Radical voters, increasingly anti-police and anti-Israel, are emboldening candidates who prioritize ideology over community safety. American Jews, long loyal to the Democratic Party, must confront this reality: today’s far-left Democrats are not their allies. The primaries offer a chance to reject extremism and restore sanity. NYC voters, the blood spilled in DC demands your action—cast out the enablers of hate on June 24 and send a resounding message that antisemitism has no place in our city.
