Coming off of NYC Primary Night that was dominated by the Socialist Democrats who stand strongly against Israel and The Jewish People. Tensions boiled over at Brooklyn coffee shop: as protest highlights deep divisions over Israel and The Jewish People.

A Brooklyn coffee shop has become the latest flashpoint in New York City's heated debates over the Israel-Gaza conflict. Poetica Coffee drew national attention after publicly refusing future service to U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.), a Jewish lawmaker known for his support of Israel.

The incident began when Goldman visited a Poetica location with his young daughter, who needed to use the restroom. Staff allowed it, and he purchased a coffee as a gesture of thanks. The shop later identified him via surveillance footage, issued a refund for his $9.82 order, and posted a since-deleted message on social media: "Do you see how it doesn’t taste like genocide juice?" They added that they do not serve "racists, fascists, homophobes, genocide enablers, or anyone in between," linking his patronage to support for Israel.

The U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division opened an investigation into the chain for possible discrimination in public accommodations.

On Wednesday, pro-Israel demonstrators gathered outside the Park Slope/Williamsburg-area shop under the banner ". They protested what they described as targeted discrimination against Jews based on their views on Israel. Counter-protesters, including rabbis from Jews United Against Zionism (a fringe anti-Zionist group), showed up with Palestinian flags and used bullhorns to criticize Israel and Zionism. NYPD officers intervened to separate the groups and prevent clashes on the sidewalk.

Goldman called the shop's actions "sad" and expressed hope for lowering political temperatures amid a tough Democratic primary (which he lost to Brad Lander). The shop's owner has faced additional scrutiny over past social media posts comparing Israel to Nazi Germany.

This episode underscores broader challenges in a polarized city: where political boycotts, accusations of antisemitism, and free speech claims collide in everyday spaces. Critics of the shop argue that refusing service based on religion or national origin views crosses into unlawful discrimination. Supporters frame it as principled opposition to Israeli policies. Public businesses generally must serve customers without regard to protected characteristics, though enforcement and interpretation vary.

The story continues to spark debate online and in New York politics, reflecting unresolved tensions years after October 7, 2023. Whether it leads to legal consequences or simply more protests remains to be seen.
