Zohran Mamdani, the 33-year-old democratic socialist who recently clinched the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, is facing intense scrutiny over his past praise for the “Holy Land Five,” a group convicted of funneling over $12 million to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization. As Mamdani emerges as the presumptive Democratic nominee, questions swirl about whether his controversial history aligns with the values of New York voters.

In a 2017 rap song titled “Salaam,” performed under the stage name Mr. Cardamom, Mamdani expressed “love to the Holy Land Five,” referring to five individuals convicted in 2008 on 108 counts, including providing material support for terrorism, tax fraud, and money laundering. The Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, once the largest Muslim charity in the U.S., was shut down by federal authorities in 2001 for allegedly serving as a front to fund Hamas’s activities. Critics, including the antisemitism-fighting group Canary Mission, have called Mamdani’s lyrics a “shocking” endorsement of terror funders, with former Governor Andrew Cuomo labeling it “disgusting and despicable.” Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa echoed this sentiment, stating it’s “alarming” for a mayoral hopeful to praise such a group.

Mamdani, who has positioned himself as a progressive champion for affordability and working-class New Yorkers, has not directly addressed the rap lyrics since they resurfaced during the campaign. His supporters argue that his focus on policies like fare-free buses, rent freezes, and taxing the wealthy reflects the priorities of a city grappling with economic challenges. They dismiss the criticism as a distraction from his grassroots momentum, which propelled him past establishment favorite Cuomo in a stunning upset.

However, the controversy has sparked broader concerns. Posts on X have amplified the issue, with some users accusing Mamdani of sympathizing with terrorists and questioning his fitness for office. Others, like Rep. Elise Stefanik, have used the revelation to fundraise, branding Mamdani a “Hamas terrorist sympathizer.” These attacks, coupled with Mamdani’s vocal criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza and his support for the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, have fueled accusations of antisemitism from opponents, which Mamdani has tearfully denied, emphasizing his commitment to fighting anti-Jewish prejudice.

As Mamdani heads toward the November 2025 general election, where he’ll face Republican Curtis Sliwa and possibly independent candidates like Mayor Eric Adams or Cuomo, the “Holy Land Five” controversy risks overshadowing his progressive agenda. With New York City’s diverse electorate, including one of the largest Jewish populations outside Israel, Mamdani’s ability to navigate these criticisms will be crucial. Can he convince voters that his past remarks don’t define his vision for the city, or will this scandal derail his historic bid to become NYC’s first Muslim mayor? Only time will tell.

On November 5th 2024 as a nation we chose good over evil. We are now faced with the challenge of making that choice once again. As we face that a person who stands behind Radical Islamic Terrorism, Socialism and Wealth Redistribution is running for Mayor of the largest city in the world.
